In 2018, I teamed up with an anthropologist and a photographer to explore the small Romanian town of Câmpulung. We found a deeply moving and reflective tale at the town intersection, and so we created Canton, named after the small hub-like intersection building that links together a whirlwind of people and activity.
Canton follows Bombi, a nonagenarian determined to find out who has been stealing from her fruit trees. Her quest forces her to confront bigger issues and contemplate the fragility of life.
Canton was in the official selection of Glasgow Short Film Festival 2023. It won best documentary at the Kiez Berlin Film Festival 2023. It was shown at the EMBASSY Gallery’s Artist Moving Image Festival in Decmeber 2022. It was featured in the official selection of the Cinematic European Film Festival 2021, The John Bryne Award 2020, The Lift-Off Sessions 2020, and the Andromeda Film Festival 2020.
